Notes |
- I have in my possession a copy of an undated, barely legible letter in which my great-grandfather's mother, ELIZA H. NEWMAN, bequeathed her few meagre possessions to her family of seven sons. The letter is estimated to have been written about 1860 and is remarkable in the geographic diversity of the recipients. The sons were listed as follows - ED. NEWMAN (EDWARD?), RICHARD C. NEWMAN & WALTER NEWMAN - Elora Canada West; HENRY H. NEWMAN - General Post Office Sydney; GEORGE NEWMAN - Ealing, England; WILLIAM NEWMAN - 517 Grand Street, New York; ALFRED NEWMAN (my great-grandfather) - Bathurst, New South Wales.
They had 7 sons and 1 daughter [1]

Notes |
- He is known to have spent some time in India, but I have been unable to discover when he arrived in Australia and by what means. There is a suspicion that he "jumped ship" possibly from the Royal Navy. During his life time in New South Wales he is not known to have given his exact age.
Canada must have been a popular spot for migrants. My grandfather Newman married a Minnie Feather who was born in Montreal. I also understand that my Logan relatives came to Australia from Montreal.
To date I have had limited success in tracing the movements of my great-grandfather Newman, being unable to discover when he arrived in Australia and the circumstances of his arrival.
They had 6 daughters and 1 son [1]
