  My maternal grandfather's grandmother was born Martha Newman. She was quite a formidable woman. She was born in 1845 in Burnham on Crouch, Essex to who I believe was William Newman and Mary Crouch. She was the second wife to Elijah Thornton and step-mother to several children before giving birth to my GGrandfather Arthur Courtney Thornton. After 2 years of marriage, she was widowed and spent the rest of her life working as a nurse to support herself and her child. In fact, my GGrandfather had to lodge with people from a very young age (7) because she was living and working in the hospitals. [1]
